Dancers in a black and white studio rehearsal photograph — In rehearsal: the ensemble shapes the work before it meets an audience.

The project

Contemporary movement. The memory of a familiar melody.

Presented by Sutra Foundation, this Malaysian contemporary dance programme brought together Revelling, Stand by Me and the title work, Malam Bulan di Pagar Bintang. Vintage Malay film songs gave the title piece its distinctive atmosphere.

Vivek Menon / Surprise Ventures served as producer for the 2024 production at PJPAC, with concept, artistic direction and choreography by Datuk Ramli Ibrahim.

A dancer is lifted by the ensemble during a studio rehearsal — An ensemble moment from the production’s rehearsal photographs.
